The Global Engagement Crisis: Why It Matters Now More Than Ever
May 28, 2025
According to Gallup's latest State of the Global Workplace report, global employee engagement has declined from 23% to 21% in 2024, marking only the second drop since 2009. This downturn translates to an estimated $438 billion in lost productivity worldwide.
Managers at the Epicenter
Managers have experienced the most significant decline in engagement, dropping from 30% to 27%. Notably, engagement among managers under 35 fell by five percentage points, and female managers saw a seven-point decrease. Factors contributing to this trend include increased responsibilities, budget constraints, and shifting workplace expectations.
The Ripple Effect on Wellbeing
Employee wellbeing has also suffered, with only 33% of employees reporting they are thriving—a consecutive yearly decline. Engaged employees are more likely to report higher life satisfaction, highlighting the intrinsic link between workplace engagement and overall wellbeing.
A Path Forward: Rethinking Management
Gallup's research emphasizes the need to redesign managerial roles to focus on performance coaching and employee development. Organizations that invest in comprehensive manager training programs see significant improvements in team engagement and performance metrics.
Action Steps for Leaders
- Invest in Manager Development: Provide training that equips managers with coaching and leadership skills.
- Foster a Culture of Engagement: Encourage open communication and recognize employee contributions regularly.
- Prioritize Employee Wellbeing: Implement policies that support work-life balance and mental health.
By addressing these areas, organizations can combat the decline in engagement and build a more resilient, productive workforce.
Together we can create change. It starts with us.
